“A conversation is a dialogue, not a monologue. That's why there are so few good conversations: due to scarcity, two intelligent talkers seldom meet.”
― Truman Capote
Yes, it's possible to enjoy time with your family again.
We’ve all been there.
Everyone’s in the kitchen, cooking together, drinking mulled wine and picking at finger food while your brothers and uncle try to deep fry a turkey for the first time (fire extinguisher at the ready).
Everything’s going great. Everyone is laughing and updating each other on new promotions, lifelong friendships, and the drama of everyday life.
Then suddenly, someone starts talking about politics and all hell breaks loose.
What started as a pleasant family get-together turns to a heated debate between you, your mom, and everyone else in room. Some people stay and pick their side. Others choose to leave the room so they enjoy their cheese plate from the basement. Your dad wants nothing to do with any of it so he heads out front to trim the hedges for the second time today.
So what do you do?
Well, you can walk away or leave… but that never seems to solve the problem, especially when you’re already triggered. And since you don’t want to upset your mom, you stay. Maybe you drink more wine to numb it, or maybe you pull out your phone and start researching articles that back up your side of the argument. That never works, either. But you’re upset, and you know you're right anyways… so now is the time to prove everyone else wrong.
Sound familiar?
Don't cancel your mom for Christmas! We know she can be a little extreme sometimes, but she loves you.
You shouldn't have to agree on everything to get along, especially when the solution is so simple: learning to have better conversations.
"Don't Cancel Your Mom" is a 4-week crash course on how to have better conversations with friends and family over the holidays… and anytime.
It's designed to help you stay calm and engaged when your uncle starts talking about politics... again... and will teach you how to find common ground with your loved ones, even if they are a little crazy from time to time.
We'll show you how to meet people where they are instead of needing to escape the house with your little sister and her kids... and provide simple techniques to restore peace and laughter to your holiday gatherings (that doesn't involve more wine).
Using a combination of art, expression, and education, we'll inspire you to build bridges instead of walls, so you can all get back to enjoying Elf... and, it might even help to radically change the way you relate to everyone, not just your relatives.
And the best part: it costs less than the price of a single family therapy session, and let's face it... those aren't usually that fun...
Join the conversation and get back to doing what you do best: beating everyone else at Scattergories.
